Hamid Dalwai Institute of Muslim Studies

Building knowledge for a more equal society.

The Hamid Dalwai Research Institute studies the questions that shape public life for minorities. Our work spans education, gender justice, minority studies and social reforms. We combining research, documentation and community programmes to produce knowledge that informs public debate and expands opportunity.

Why We Exist

Every society depends on institutions that ask difficult questions with honesty, document lived realities with care and place evidence in the public domain.

Since 1995, the Hamid Dalwai Research Institute has worked to strengthen that tradition. We study issues affecting marginalized Muslim and Bahujan communities, preserve important intellectual histories and develop programmes that respond to challenges identified through research.

Our work is guided by the belief that research must be actionable, and result in tangible outcomes.

Asking Difficult Questions

Hamid Dalwai argued that social reform begins with reason, equality and the willingness to question accepted ideas. His writing challenged orthodoxy, defended constitutional values and opened conversations that remain relevant today.

Founded in August 1995, the Institute continues that work through research, public education and sustained engagement with communities across Maharashtra.
